Why rubber, foam, and composites are cut cold

A heat-affected edge ruins a gasket and delaminates a composite. Waterjet leaves the sheet as it arrived, minus the profile.

A cold-cut plate edge

Thermal cutting is the right tool for a lot of steel. It is the wrong tool for a rubber gasket, a foam pad, or a carbon panel. Heat shrinks rubber, melts plastics, and can burn the resin out of a composite so the fibres fray.

Waterjet cutting in the Osborne Park shop is a cold process. Garnet in a 60,000 psi stream does the cutting. The sheet does not get a heat-affected zone, which is why the same bed runs stainless in the morning and gasket sheet in the afternoon.

What that means on a real part

  • Seals and floor-mat profiles stay the size they were drawn.
  • Foam and soft sheet are not dragged or crushed the way a knife can drag them.
  • Carbon fibre and fibreglass keep the resin at the edge.
  • Hardened or already-heat-treated plate is not softened along the profile.
